billabong's dean bowen got some of the most insane deep/massive/exploding/nuggets/slabzzz/funnels i have ever seen on friday 17/06/11, during a session on the south coast of australia. just look above at the 'a slab frame grab' standing tall, easy 8 footer hands in the air.

with a massive ENE swell and offshore winds all day it was quite obvious where we were heading to get the best of the conditions, and it was definitely the right choice.

waking up at 2:30am tuesday morning may 17th dean bowen and friends travel to the far south coast to surf 10-15 foot slabs. with the incredible size of the swell that hits the east coast of australia, the session grabs the attention of WIN NEWS and reporter Rob Beaumont covers the story.

shooting video at pipeline from water is one of the hardest jobs and experiences i have had. not many film makers are getting in the water these days and when half the population of videographers and photographers are on the beach all getting the same shot, when you get the opportunity to capture moments in time like these its maybe worth the dip.

slater arrives off the plane and heads straight to ours in sydney.
kelly slater heads to wollongong just south of sydney for some perfect 4 foot beach breaks.
after victorious at this years quicksilver pro the king decided to head to nsw for some of the best and cleanest swells to ever grace the south coast of australia. only kelly slater would have that type of luck. above is kelly slater in his playground.

r.i.p sion milosky 1976 - 2011
at roughly 6:20pm 17th march 2011 the world lost one of the best big wave surfers ever. sion milosky from hawaii drowned at mavericks in north california.
"on this particular wave, he was right in the heart of the bowl. He made the drop, got to the bottom, did a bottom turn and the thing just mowed him over. there was no making it to the shoulder on that." explained longtime mav's charger ryan seelbach.
seelbach was on a ski with filmer chris killen on the shoulder when the set hit. milosky went down on the first wave. "i saw his board tombstoning and jumped off the ski," explained seelbach. The set lasted four or five waves.
"he had to be 20 feet down and the next wave was right on top of him," explained killen. "i knew I had to get in there, but the wave washed in and he was gone. There was no board, no nothing. i went by the rocks, mushroom rocks, the lagoon, looking all over for him."
great friend nathan fletcher rescued sion's body from the harbourmouth about a mile away and then they met him on the beach. sion was lifeless. nathan was losing his mind. sion's eyes were open and his face was blue.
zodiac media spent the last month in hawaii shooting. sion was the one making all the noise out pipe and backdoor with the best and biggest barrels ridden. the footage we have gathered of sion milosky from this years winter will be a testimony to how great a surfer sion was and will be honored in our up-and-coming film 'raw'. sion milosky we will miss you deeply and will always be in our hearts.

after departing sydney airport and arriving in honolulu the same day i am picked up at the airport by ben starr. we arrive at the pipeline on the northshore around 8:20am, camera is charged and so are the surfers in the water. with day 1 complete the swell continued to pulse and so did the level of surfing.
